The bodies of Mandy Staples, 35, and her ex-husband Marcos Gagnon, 43, who'd been living in Atlantic County, were found on the second floor of their Schlosser Drive home around 11 a.m., Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
The children -- ages 5 and 6 -- were found unharmed in the home and were being cared for, responders said.
Musella said the causes of death had "not yet been determined" and that the incident "appears to be isolated."
A friend had found one of the bodies on top of the other in a second-floor hallway, sources told Daily Voice. There were no signs of a struggle or external physical injury, they said.
Even though no foul play was initially suspected, the circumstances demanded a more intensive look -- including toxicology tests on the bodies -- just to be sure, they said.
Detectives from Musella's Major Crimes Unit were investigating along with borough police, the county Medical Examiner's Office and the Bergen County Sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence. Investigators were trying to determine, among other things, how long the two had been dead.
Neighbors said the family had been living on the small block off Passaic Street near the township municipal complex the past few years.
